Some people love to wear new things immediately..I am the opposite (to a fault), I have to wait to feel like I’m in the exact mood to wear something. Colin had been egging me on to break this headpiece out for a few months and we finally came upon the perfect place to shoot it while running around one of the canyons by our place in San Diego. Although arguably a happened upon tepee is the perfect place to take pictures of anything. RP Encore is a fascinating label, as in one of those sites you click on that makes you stop and stare to figure out exactly what is going on. The idea behind designer Reid Peppard’s designs reminds me of American Beauty’s Ricky Fitts’ take on ordinary or grisly sights taking your breath away if you just take the time to see them right (I’m sure everyone remembers the plastic bag scene):

Ricky Fitts: I was filming this dead bird.
Angela Hayes: Why?
Ricky Fitts: Because it’s beautiful.

That scene pretty much inspired the entirety of my interest in photography, and is probably why I take way too many shots of like, the ground and broken things. Anyway, Reid uses animals that have already suffered their fates and transforms them into everything from cufflinks to necklaces. This is of course visually upsetting to some people and some of the pieces may be hard to translate into daily wear, possibly including this headpiece she sent me, as much as I may love it. But the final message I get from her work is the possibility of finding and creating beauty from unlikely sources. Check out this Huffington post article here if you remain curious.

trinity earcuff/siamese ring

08/11/2010, jewelry

At the beach in Encinitas today wearing a couple of the pieces I designed for Dannijo/Tobi – the Trinity earcuff and the Siamese ring alongside Pamela Love and Iosseliani stone rings. I really wanted to keep these two wearable and simple, with the idea of wearing them in multiples as an option. I’ve been going on about earcuffs for the entire existence of this blog so I was pretty much frothing at the mouth to breathe life into my own ideas. It feigns a triple helix piercing connected by a bar up the center..and it’s just bendable enough to get it on which means it’s secure and so comfortable you forget it’s there. I like how it looks like a series of hammered staples..I’m picturing wearing two or three next time so they go all the way up the ear. The Siamese ring was based on the idea of wearing simple bands above the knuckle..I’ve never been able to find anything small enough to fit there and wanted to create something with a double banded effect..thus the anchoring with the chain and lower band. I like it worn with big knuckle or stone rings to create a kind of umm finger balance. There’s also a little fang affixed to the chain that you can’t see here…so surreal getting to talk about my own jewelry line!

(fashiontoast x Dannijo Loveless ring and Siamese rings, Zara dress and belt, bag courtesy of Hope, Jessica Simpson hat, Dolce & Gabbana wedges)

A couple things I tweaked a little – the dress is supposed to be a knee length robe sort of thing but I hiked the oversized sleeves up on my shoulders to give it a curved hem and trashed the matching slip and belt that it came with…then added this metal one that’s actually become a crux of a wardrobe staple. The hat suffered a similar fate since it originally had a horrible felt flower attached to it. Worth all the destruction though, I’ve worn both to death already. Are you guys into it when I actually talk about the clothes?

Took these at the tail end of NYFW with a little bit of a broken spirit. Crappy things happen sometimes. And chapped lips, apparently. All seems a bit distant when I’m here in LA with my favorite New Yorkers though sitting around in the heat and mocking each other endlessly. Got a couple appointments tomorrow and then the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party, should be fun. And it looks like I’m going to San Francisco for a couple days next week so might get some family time in. I’m starting to hear birds chirping outside so I’m thinking it’s time to sleep now though.

From the Rebecca Minkoff presentation yesterday at Lincoln Center. Definitely a new thing for me but such a great experience working with Rebecca and her team was so much fun. I loved the simplicity of the dress (already available for pre-order here) and the hair was just really really good. The Made Her Think earring (worn with Mr. Kate ear cuffs) was literally sewn into my hair and reminded me of a kind of elf princess from the sea. If such a thing were to exist. Thank you to Rebecca for being such a sweetheart and having me be a part of the presentation!

Wearing a headpiece that Mr. Kate sent me last week and having some fun at the Soho Grand. Fashion week has been crazy so far..right now waiting for the Derek Lam show to start at Lincoln Center and trying to figure out what Leighton Meester is wearing. And since I suck at staying on top of posting when I’m traveling, see what I’m doing sooner on Twitter here.
