on track

ph. by Colin Sokol

(thrifted bustier over RVCA dress, American Apparel socks..thank you AA for sending me packages of weird things every now and then..my favorites are the oddities that never make it to their website, vintage coat, Jessica Simpson platforms)

This coat is without a doubt now the warmest thing I own...with the 25 lb. weight behind it to prove it. Wearing dramatic coats around here is something that I find a sort of strange pleasure in. For one, people seem to be impressed by anything more than a substantial-ish sweatshirt..and even when wearing said dramatic piece yields an ideal body temperature, there are slight undertones of crazy that go along with the whole situation. I find this all very funny apparently.

I get a lot of questions in regards to the "braveness" to dress any way you want to in the public eye..be it the grocery store, school, party, etc...and where I get the confidence to wear this or that. Which is strange to me because I'm really not that out there in my mind...but it's touching in the most real way to read emails from girls that thought they were too tall to wear platform heels/afraid what their peers would think if they were to dress the way they wanted to/want to add some glamour back into their lives saying that I've inspired them to break out of the box in any way. My outlook has always been that people in the streets aren't dressing to please me, why should I take them into account when dressing myself? Playing with clothes is one of the most basic pleasures in life along with other stupid crap like peeling nail polish off in single sheets, crawling into a sun warmed car, and laughing about nothing and everything. If I were to die tomorrow I would be glad that I wore a slightly inappropriate coat and five inch heels to a deserted train station in the middle of the day. You know what I mean?

I love this post! I admit that I'm one of those girls that are a bit self conscious about what I wear-especially at school. But I think I'm slowly just starting to not even care anymore because life is too quick to worry about these kinds of things. And thanks for being an amazing source of constant inspiration!

You're amazing to go into the street dressed like this! I'm too shy to do so. I envy your confidence in you, it's an outfit that attracts attention. I hope that growing (I'm 16 years old) I would be confident enough to go out in such attire. Sorry for my bad english, i'm french.

Beautiful post Rumi! I agree exactly with everything you've said here. This is the way I look at dressing too, and what I always drill into my friends with less body confidence. Thanks for putting these sentiments out there for so many people to see and be inspired by :D
And I love the corset you're wearing today. And how did you get that high angle in the first photoe? Loved it.

Wow that coat is so awesome! And I've really been thinking a lot about dressing the way I want to. I live in a place where people seem afraid to dress nice. And get offended when others do so. I've been wearing Creepers and I absolutely love them! I have so much fun just walking around on them. But people just seem offended, some have even yelled nasty stuff to me. I really applaud you for expressing yourself, and your natural approach to it.

Wonderful words, really. I use to change clothes every single moment because i never end up convinced with my choice... but i'm gonna try following what you said, not care for others, i'm gonna dress for myself only , what i like, even my boyfriend sometimes say that when i windowshop, i like the most horrible things (he doesn't like platforms for instance, i'm pretty tall but he's too so i don't care, it's not that i end taller than him when using heels, so too bad for him , i'm going to use them either way haha)
great post, again, rumi,

As people above me have said, this is my favorite post. I live in a tiny town near Charlotte, NC. There might be one or two students at the college who are fashion conscious at any one time, but generally, the entire town is all casual and comfortable. I feel super self-conscious whenever I wear anything that is slightly off the norm, even if I am 100% in love with the outfit. I don't know how to get away from that self-conscious feeling, especially when everyone is staring at you because you're wearing 5 inch heels/platforms, or black tights and denim shorts, or, you know, ANYTHING different..

Oh I adore those sheer socks.
This is a fabulous outfit. You're right, it doesn't really look -that- out there, but some people can be very boring and generic in the way they dress. But thanks to them, people like you will stand out!

Love it.

You really are pretty Rumi. Thank you so much for dressing the way you do and commenting about how people said you inspire them. This post has inspired me to want to dress the way I want to. Because of you, I really think I will.
Thanks again.
