20/20

(Forever 21 crystal headband and zipper jeans, Grey Ant Status sunglasses, thrifted sweater, American Apparel tshirt, Dolce & Gabbana wedges, Givenchy bag)

I have an issue with very low prioritization when it comes to denim..all my shorts are gross cut up things from the thrift store and I can't remember the last time I tried on some high-end jeans. Most of the time when I find myself wanting new jeans I just 'customize' my existing pairs, which rarely ends up right and leaves me with less than I had to begin with. But somehow when I ordered these jeans online a few months ago they slid on perfectly upon arrival. Weird. I wore this out to sushi and magazine stand-ing and then shopping.

Of far more consequence, I bit the bullet and did something that I've always wanted to do last Thursday..I had LASIK done. I can thank my parents for a fast metabolism but in terms of eyesight they pretty much screwed me. I've worn contacts almost exclusively (that constant peripheral sight of the side of glasses frames never worked for me) but never found a brand that didn't give me that feeling of something foreign being in my eyes. I keep a pretty random schedule too and always find myself awake and red-eyed in the wee hours of the morning when my contacts really start dying on me. This gets boring fast. I did my research and went to the San Diego LASIK Institute last month for a consultation with Dr. Pham (to be honest, finally doing this was largely spurred by having run out of contacts again and not wanting to go through the process of getting my prescription updated and buying them again) and after having my eyes checked in a million different ways and dilated to all hell (err really hope that that there wasn't a camera on that no turn on red on the drive back) it turned out I was a really good candidate. Colin was freaked out but I told him I trusted the doctor, that the entire procedure would be as custom-built for my eyes as possible, and that no harm could come from someone who keeps their office so stocked with gummi bears and granola bars. So he took me in for the procedure last Thursday and it ended up being a thousand times less scary than I thought possible and weirdly painless. I spent the rest of the day knocked out on valium and woke up with 20/20 vision the next morning. Seeing my bedroom, alarm clock and all, so clearly in the morning light was surreal...it feels like a miracle and I'm still in shock that these are my eyes. Now it's just no makeup or exercise for a week (this is probably the worst part of the whole thing) and then my bionic eyes can take all the bodies of water, red-eye flights, and spontaneous stay-overs that come my way.

I'm glad the Lasik went well... eyeball procedures scare me to all hell, but it is good to know that they're not all terrifying. (I too, trust doctors who supply gummi bears. No bad people have that kind of delicious in their offices.)

oh god, i have been having fantasys of lasik ever since my eyes started acting funny with contacts about a year ago. Ever since then its just glasses/blindness on and off.

can't afford the 4000 bones tho...I was kinda considering selling my eggs for it tho...eh.

I want to get Lasik...have to wait another year. The thing is, I have grown an attachment to my glasses. I have a Prada pair I have clung to tenaciously for two years, two vintage pairs, another neon pink Prada (sensing a pattern with my favorite brand?), Jill Stuart cat eyes...I'll be sad when I have to get rid of them, but it'll be so sweet when I don't wake up with inflamed red-as-the-devil eyes because I fell asleep on my boyfriend's couch/partied too long and passed out/just was lazy.

Anyhoo, your jeans are amazing. I envy your ability to find amazing styles and pull them off seamlessly.

E said...

I'm getting lasik in two weeks and I'm kind of freaking out. I hear it's so amazing once you can wake up and see though. I'm so freaking blind. That first photo is incredible. I love the depth of field.

if you look that good in jeans from F21 why bother trying on designer ones?? totally love them, and the shoes... and the t-shirt. i've got 6 of those in different shapes/sizes (all in that grey) love them. xx

That's great that Lasik went well for you! I've been considering it myself but have been way too nervous..maybe I'll swing by Dr. Pham since I live in the San Diego area! And if you don't mind me asking, what's your exercise regimen? I've been eating healthy for as long as I can remember, but toning up is definitely my problem. I'd be grateful if you could do a post on that sort of thing. Thanks!

Midori said...

holy shit lasik. did they tell you that you couldn't touch your eyes at all for a week or so after the procedure? i think i'd die. all the same i think i'd consider it if my vision got really bad. actually it may already be really bad but i'm just in denial. anyway.

shot #2 = very pretty lighting and framing! and that zipper is crazy in a good way.

I am 2 weeks post-Lasik and I am constantly in awe of my new vision. Even with good contacts the world was never so crisp and clear. My eyes don't feel dry and grainy at the end of a long day and I don't have to carry contacts with my any time I go further than four hours away from home. I can't wait to try out swimming without contacts - I haven't been able to do that since I was 6 years old.

So what I am saying is... I know exactly how you feel! It is the most amazing thing in the world.

Love the wedges, by the way. You seem to be able to work them into so many different looks that they constantly look like different shoes altogether. Dior has a pair in their s/s 2010 that have a similar style that I am thinking about buying now...

You got LASIK? Niceeee..... Although I'm blessed to naturally have 20/20 vision, I'm surrounded with family and friends who unfortunately don't, so I totally understand what you had to go through... Don't you feel that it's so much more convenient now that you got your eyes done? you won't have to worry about your contacts being left too long in your eyes, losing your glasses, etc. etc. [which I've seen too many of in my life lol]

I love your grey pull! It seems really warm! My boyfriend has one like that, it's a U-NI-TY and it's really cosy and nice to wear. I always steal it from him, so he's not really happy, but I don't care, if he wants me to be fine, it's the only solution ^^! lol!

xo, love your blog!

Congratulations! I've been wanting to do that for a while, but doctors say it's better to wait after 25, that way you're sure your eyes have stopped they growth. It does seem like a miracle!

i've toyed with the idea of LASIK as well. i can only imagine how miraculous it must be to wake up in the morning and SEE. I mean, really, really see. I've always envied people with 20/20 vision - they haven't got an inkling of how lucky they are.

as always, lovely outfit. i love checking my fashion toast while gettin' spruced up in the early morn'

Love the jeans and congrats on the LASIK! I, too, would love 20/20 vision but every time I think I've worked up enough courage to go have it done. I change my mind again :P

The zippered jeans are lovely. And LASIK- I've always been too scared to give it a try. But I'm starting to get tired of contacts too.

oh wow, I've always dreamed of getting lasik, but am SO FREAKED OUT by a laser in my eyeballs!! So, it wasnt painful? I was endowed with very bad vision as well, but just cant do contacts. Its such a hassle to wear glasses all of the time and not even have the option of contacts some days... I am curious to hear more about the lasik procedure if you have a minute. Scary? did it work? Is it true that it sometimes wears off after a long time? Thanks, Rumi! You are always inspirational!!

I like the outfit and I'm happy to hear you can see! :)

I just recently was giving a prescription for reading glasses and I'm THRILLED. I've always wanted glasses.

My boyfriend had lasik done last year, and he said it was they best thing ever! One thing though, for the first 6 months, his eyes dried up constantly, so remember to bring eye-drops everywhere you go!

By the way, I love your wedges. I'm going to go hunt one down for myself :)
