In my Halloween jacket again. It's really hard to find good vintage pieces with hoods, so of course it would be my luck that this thing disintegrates a little bit every time I wear it. And actually these pants split shortly after these were taken. Must be my acid flesh.
And to clarify a few things in response to some recent comments:
I'm not going to put on an act for this blog or dress any other way than what comes naturally. Reinvention is one of the more awkward things you can force and I have no interest in exploring the exact level of awkward it would be. People take a measurement of my effortlessness with every post, say my body's changed or my hair fills them with rage, that I've lost my whimsy, that I'm no longer able to channel 4 styles at once, and make countless other judgments but things change. People change. If any of these are applicable, then aren't they themselves a form of reinvention? I promise you if every look I posted was whimsical (this word is starting to lose all meaning to me the more I ponder it) the exact same vein of 'complaints' would be voiced with a new word to fill in the blank with. I've been getting diatribes about over-wearing black tights and denim shorts since the inception of Fashiontoast so you'll pardon me if I've learned to shrug them off. This doesn't mean that I hate you or don't read your comments or am trying to insult you by wearing certain items repeatedly. I'm a normal person with a normal penchant for reaching for similar things over and over again and hey sometimes I even go to CVS in sweatpants. They say San Clemente Gun Club on them. More and more I catch myself feeling as if I shouldn't post this or that because I already wore it in a vaguely similar way and I just don't want to even begin to feel that way about a diary that I began simply to share my point of view. I have never claimed to be revolutionary or even noteworthy, which is why I am still so shocked to have such supportive and passionate readers. So thank you a million times over again and I'm sincerely, sincerely honored that you care so much. I'm just going to keep being me..

Your blog has been the biggest fashion inspiration to me since I discovered it! I'm glad that you don't let the negative comments get to you. After all, it's your style and your life, and it's impossible to wear one article of clothing just once in your life. If it helps, I love it when you repeat certain pieces of clothing. It assures the rest of us that hey, clothing is meant to be actually worn and not just tossed away after one blog post. Keep doing what you do with confidence!

Hey, get that gorgeous piece of vintage fur to maintenance! The leather is just probably dry from the long storage time without maintenance - but usually an injection of leather care stuff helps to restore the suppleness and durability of leather. Small tears can be repaired at the same time.
I totally agree with you, hooded vintage furs are so hard to come by, I would snag that one in a heartbeat.
Dunno how DIY person you are, but I have one fur maintenance project going on - and I will post about it within a month. Or maybe I should just advice professional care, tho, I can not stand the idea of that gorgeous piece ruined :-D
And BTW, just keep on doing what you do, it is enjoyable, no matter what some people have to say.

Rumi, I've never really left a comment, but sometimes I did saw some of those horrible (almost always) anonymous comments. I can't believe how rude people can be and sometimes I was even shocked that they said those things to you. The things you wear aren't my style, not even close, but I love to see you wearing those things! I don't mind if you wear things multiple times! You're not Paris Hilton who has all the money of the world! You're way better than her actually, but that's something different.

Blog readers tend to decide they know you intimately and get angry when you let them down, as though you owe them something.
We're all just people. That's why I never want to meet my 'idols'. They'd turn out to be boring and akward and kind of strange just like me. And that would shatter the pedestal I put them on.
Some people ask to be put on pedestals and some people don't. And if you find yourself on one without any intentions of being there you just need to stay true to one person - you. It's how you accidentally got up there in the first place and the only way to survive once you're there.
Keep doing whatever it is you're doing. You're doing it well.

I've been blogging for about 1.5 year, growing more and more sick of it (not because of the comments, though, but rather because of the sick concept of the "fashion blogging community" in the country where I happen to live), but ever since I got to browse thru personal style blogs regularly I've noticed the following things:
- if you wear the same thing over and over again, some people are gonna say you're boring and a one-note;
- if you wear something different each time, some people are gonna say you're spoiled and begin to invent stories on how on earth you get the money to afford what you wear;
- if you wear something they would never wear, some people will say you're not inspirational, because who in God's name would dress like that;
- if you wear something they would wear, some people will say, again, that you are not inspirational, because they have already come up with the very same idea, so what new are you serving them - nothing;
- if everything you wear and post is perfect, some people will say your grammar sucks.
Being permanently displeased is like some people's job, I suppose. Sorry about the essay-ish comment, it all boils down to: I like your blog ;)

whimsical is my old track pants and singlet. If I'm going out, I will make many decisions about what to wear. cut, colour, weather and zeitgeist. this is the essence of fashion; a vestige of decision amongst an ocean of whimsy.

When you put yourself out there you open yourself to all comments, criticisms, judgments, etc. Sadly it's one of the downfalls of opening a piece of your life to others. I've been an on and off reader of FT since last year and I have noticed a lateral change. I would say she had more of an indie vibe to her now she's mainstream, which isn't bad obviously. I think that if you want to blog and be happy Rumi you should stop being so static [in reference to you feeling like you can't post certain outfits because you've worn them before]. In a perfect world every comment would smell like a meadow of honeysuckles. This is real life filled with real jerks. At the end of the day you do this for the love of blogging and fashion right? If the answer is yes, then people can fuck off. Why care about whether people talk about your hair (if you like it) Or you weight (if you think you've always been the same size)? We all have pieces we like. Mine being a pair of Jeffery Campbell's I plan on wearing in the next lifetime as well. So what you like black, tights, and denim shorts. It looks good on you. Don't we all like things we feel comfy, confident, and stylish in? The fact that you even made this rant makes me feel bad for you. Screw the comments you don't agree with. The only way they should hold merit is if they are true. I wouldn't waste anymore time addressing them (people who are just nasty and rude) I take it they love it.

If you think that the negative comments are influencing your blog in a way you don't want them to (like when you feel like you shouldn't post certain outfits because of their similarity to other posts), then you can always turn off comments.
That way, you can let your readers know that this is YOUR blog, and the only reason you keep posting is because you naturally like to do it, not because you want to make other people happy. Your readers will keep coming back, and will realize that you're not blogging just to rack up comments.
Jane did it... Lulu did it too. And they had good reasons, IMO.

I completely agree with you. It is so frustrating reading peoples opinions that are just meant to be hurtful or are caused by jealousy. The fashion blog community is a immensely large pool of diverse people and styles. That is the fun part about all of the blogs and comments....we've all created a way to expose each other to different styles,editorials, opinions ect. from around the world while sitting in the comfort of our own homes. And you are what most consider the leader of this phenomenon. Almost all of us have you to thank for opening the doors.
With that said...
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and you are entitled to your rebuttal. I think sometimes opinions can be mistaken for attacks. It might be hard for you to decipher when people truly enjoy fashion and style and are simply sharing their opinions with you and people who are maliciously and hurtfully attacking you and unnecessary elements like your hair or your weight.
I'm certain you get thousands of hits a day and out of those thousands, there are going to be people that don't love what you're doing but are just interested. There are also those people that think you are gorgeous and love staring at pictures of you and telling you so and there are people that truly enjoy fashion and editoral and just want to express to you their opinions towards your actual outfit and accessories.
I hope that you can see the difference between these groups or types of people and their intentions.
You have amazing, eclectic style that is appreciated not only by the followers who visit your blog but the fashion world as a whole.

I've read your blog for a couple of months, but never commented. I remember telling my boyfriend about it the day I found it and being a bit unglamourously gushy about it :] Something along the lines of : "I looked at her pictures and it was like the first time in a while that I've been, like... inspired. Y'know?" Poor thing, I don't think he did know, haha. But the point is, I do think you're doing something so wonderful here, and it is only wonderful because it's completely you. Out of all the blogs I've run across, you can always spot the creativity instantly- it's there or it isn't. Your style is one of the best I've seen & I think we're all very lucky to experience it. Keep doing what you do- it's why we keep coming back.
It also happened to me on flickr and sometimes also on my blog,every thing I did was nice for many people and completely stupid for others. Life's like this. And there will always be people too sad about their lives who only feel better when talking bad about other people. Loser I call them, but whatever... Never care about negative comments and always be yourself. It really is the best you can do.

I don't normally bother to comment on blogs but I wanted to say that you should just keep on doing what you've been doing. Your outfits are an inspiration and I don't think they are reduntant in the least. I like the black outfits that have just a hint of color and I love the black tights with shorts. There are always going to be haters no matter what you do so don't let them stop you from wearing what your instinct tells you to wear!

This is honestly my favorite blog, and one that has made me go out on a limb and buy a professional camera. To document, is an amazing way to exercise creative energy. I love the way you dress, and if I see an outfit that doesn't blow me away, I really don't give a fuck. What is important is that you wear what you want, not what everyone else wants - defeating all the time, energy, and soul you have have put into fashiontoast. Honestly, when it comes to style it should be nobody else's but your own. It's a plus if you're comfortable in your own style. It should be like being comfortable in your own skin. Like Yves Saint Laurent once said: "I will never change. I stay faithful to my own style; what others do has nothing to do with me. It's in my character to stay away from it all. People say that fashion has to keep changing but when it really finds itself, it doesn't have to - it becomes a style. What's important for me is to refine that style, not change for the sake of change."
Just keep on doing what you're doing Rumi, you're doing a fine job.
