the city w/ the broken champagne bottle

(Zara leather jacket <- size small for those who asked, American Apparel circle scarf, RVCA Sinner dress, Forever 21 headband and cutoff jeans, vintage ankle cowboy boots, Pamela Love cross ring, Balenciaga bag)

Most comfortable outfit ever...I can't believe I've found flat footwear I love this much. I almost feel like I'm cheating on myself. And yeah it's fun to dress a little more boyish sometimes. By which I'm not referring to SD's plaid shorts uniform that crept into the background here..

Getting ready to leave for my parent's house in the Bay Area for Thanksgiving and hopefully some hunting around in my closet up there, annoying my brother, and screwing around in the city. Luckily for me my mom keeps the menu somewhat Japanese influenced...I've officially been a pescatarian for a year now and I don't think I'm going back. Much to everyone I know's chagrin. Apparently this is a choice that makes people want to immediately buy you steaks (at Fleming's, even!) and go on In-n-out rampages? And then there are the rest who just think I'm kidding.

I don't understand why people are so psyched out when you tell them you don't eat meat (or you just eat fish, which is what I do too). It really isn't that hard to give up meat, believe it or not (I'm assuming that's why people seem shocked in your situation)

Hey, I'm a pescatarian too, haha..just didn't know there were a name for it. Had to google it now, so guess I should say thanks for learning me a new word;) People always ask "so you're a vegetarian?", and I'm like "not really cause I eat fish..", and then they'll be like "vegetarians eat fish". But NO, I'm a pescatarian! :)

Anyway, love your outfit, dressing down a bit looks very nice on you.

artvisuelle said...

@HEK I guess that makes two (or three) of us now, I haven't eaten regular meat (yuck) in over an year now either... it's really a healthy option to just stick to fish IF you do eat meat (pescatarian diet rules):)
anyway, I love the BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS in this post, you should do more of these, and may I say that you can really tell that you're using a professional camera <3

Congratulations on the semi-vegetarian thing. It's a tough road, but when you see the benefits, it's hard to really justify going back to previous eating habits.

Honestly, though, why are people so intolerant of dietary changes that are obviously for the better??? I would have expected WAY more from Californians--I expected them to be more open minded. Not the narrowminded wind bags like of the Midwest who just don't *understand* the elitist mentality of eating healthily or more ecologically responsible.

And note: when I grew up in SD, I never noticed it--probably because it's everywhere--but now that you mention it... ugh, the plaid man-pris really are/were everywhere. UGH.

Hi everyone, there will be a home ware, jewellery and accessories event happening tomorrow (25/11/2009) at The Covent Hotel, London, WC2H 9HB, it starts from 6:30-10pm and it will be taking place in suite 202.

Basically me (Amma Gyan) and 5 other designers are showcasing our products in the setting of the room, so home wares on the couch, jewellery on the dressing table etc and were inviting people to come and have a look, buy gifts and get inspired. So feel free to come and have a look around.

Gorgeous. I could look at Colin's photography all day. I've always admired that RCVA dress. Question, Rumi. Do you ever wear sweats just on your casual days when you aren't taking pics for the site? If so can you show us one of your just lounging, running to the store, etc looks. We always see you dolled up to perfection . . . even your lazy outfits (such as the Zara Jacket, F21 leggings and AA tee). I'm curious to see your spin on just something very casual like sweats.

She receives free clothes from RVCA, Alex Wang and several big name designers. She has a handful of uninspired California 'trashy' looks with blank stares in every photo, yet she's signed with a next modeling agency and her blog is regarded as one of the most popular ones, so I don't think anything negative anyone has to say is really going to impact her. It's out of our hands guys, she's made it big!

Same blank expression in every photo. Nothing "compelling" about that.

Not a fan of this chick. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the best fashion blog is Luxirare. She puts all these consumerist clotheshorses to shame

I have to admit---this chick's blog intrigues the absolute hell out of me, if only because the far-reaching appeal of it wholly eludes me and remains an absolute confoundment. Basically this girl will take what amounts to a Forever 21 mannequin display look and that particular post will be flooded with 200+ comments from lemmings raving as if she's the coming of the Rapture. I must agree with NOGAREAUX---at best she pulls off a handful of "uninspired California 'trashy' looks with blank stares in every photo", and yet she has indeed made it big. Only in America, man... Only in America.

I pretty much agree with every single post I've read here concerning FT and would add (or echo) the "whole boring army of copycats" that have since spawned as a direct result of FT. The fault is with the mass of young women, who all lack identities and assimilate what they believe to be beautiful, high fashion and desirable. So while Rumi imitates Courtney Love/MKA "couture," her legions imitate her....didn't someone post earlier about the simulacrum of a simulacrum? I believe that comment would be applicable here as well.

Read more: The Guardian Gives Fashion Toast a Backhanded Compliment -- The Cut http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2009/11/the_guardian_gives_fashion_toa.html?mid=fashion-alert--20091124#comments#ixzz0XpFArQMr

Agreed, her blog is compelling, but after following for almost a year, I must admit I wish she would "evolve" a little.
I am not built at all like her, nor do I have her hunk of a photographer boyfriend, and alas I cannot wear super DOOPER high heels all day every day, but her way of mixing F21, H&M with thrift store finds and a bit of higher-end fashion inspiring.
Rumi, with many others like Camille of Childhood Flames & Gala Gomez of Amlul, seem to be flaming out. They were everywhere posting every day, and now...not so much.
Or is that just wishful thinking?

Anonymous said...

From what I saw on my click-through, it appears that Rumi has two or three different looks at the most, and just wears variations on those. She's a cute girl, but her aesthetic doesn't come across as particularly effortless, fresh, or inspiring (to me). Also, what part comprises the "compelling read"?
If I'm missing something, someone please enlighten me.

Best for magazine style editorial shoots: Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast

Rumi is a pouty, tiny-denim-shorts-wearing "epic" blogger who's spawned a whole boring army of copycats. Once you forgive her this, and the fact that she named her blog after a complex-carbohydrate source which she has clearly never eaten, what you are left with is a very compelling read. American lifestyle brand RVCA agree (they hired her to front their seasonal look book) but it's Esteban Cortazar, the designer appointed to reinvigorate the French label Emanuel Ungaro (and who left in July), who is most transfixed by her. For Cortazar, Rumi is "the girl from the mood board" that inspired his most recent collection. This scored her an invite to the brand's Paris show earlier this year and some much-coveted designer swag.

loving the headband lady! You pull off the layers really well! Like it could look really choppy but it doesn't. Beautiful photography. love the b&w!

ps-have you mentioned before that you were pescatarian? because for some reason I've always just assumed that! haha, wierd!

Ahh, loving the city-slicker pics :)

I have to admit I can't stand those cut-off jeans, but I adore the rest of your outfit. You do it so easily.

Have a great one...

And by "those cut-off jeans", I mean all of them. Don't own a single pair.

You look so cute. This is not as sexy as usual, but damn you look gorgeous.
I really like your style Rumi. You are an inspiration for me, I really mean it. Your outfits give me great ideas and I just apply those ideas to my own personality. I normally wear more color than you do ;-).
Love from your Peruvian fan in Toronto.

Flat footwear is much better for your back, trust me. Btw, those are really cool flat footwear.

Tell the meat eaters to read just a section of Jonathan Safran Foer's new book "Eating Animals". It's not too overly graphic, but it still really gets the point across. Plus his writing style is really great to read.

Love the headband, I've been looking for an extravagant headband myself.

wow all those anonymous comments seem to be produced by one angry person trying to make it seem like a debate. They are all too close together and the prose is the same. Whoever you are, you have way too much spite, go vent it on something that won't hurt other people. It's pure jealousy anyway

Eliza said...

eating ony fish is bad for the environment too... many fish are being fished out of existence. if it's for moral reasons, do you research... if not, carry on i suppose!

DiscoVery said...

It's hard to believe how many comments of jealous people do you have, they just have nothing else to do ...

The Biker leather jacket, the bag (of course), the shoes and the headband!! are absolutely FABULOUS!
And so are you
