(American Apparel mesh dress, Bakers boots)

  1. Colin shot this for Next a little while ago and I really like how the lighting came out..I still can't believe how amazing he's become with the camera
  2. Eyeing this ring to round out the collection for summer
  3. An obscenely hot weekend+ and I've been loving every second of it..been attached rather strongly to a 90s tie dyed top, a sort of haphazardly fashioned loose cutout dress, and my newly bleached out denim shorts..we made sure to ride down to the beach every possible chance that we invented
  4. I think I hate all printers
  5. My friend (we'll call him Halloween Chris here) is convinced that a group trip to Australia needs to occur soon and I'm starting to agree
  6. Some fun planned with Metal mag today

That ring is beautiful.

As is Australia. I miss it. (I'm living in France for this year). Be sure to check out Byron Bay if you're a fan of beach culture.

Melbourne is most foreigner's favourite city (and mine too, which is a bit traitorous to Brisbane, my home city).

Let us know if you are planning more solidly and we can give you some tips.

Rumi,

This is awful. I get that this is your blog, but you are wearing no clothes and ripped tights...why? This is not 'fashion' or 'model'. Models can pull off 'naked' with class, but this is just trashy. I don't get why you try so hard to be sexy. You have a hot body and you used to have great style. Don't try to hard, don't take your self so seriously and you will look more natural. You have been signed as a model, so great, what more do you have to prove? This post is very very tacky, sorry...

Anonymous said...

Midnight traveller, you suck. Malnutrition is a serious issue.

Hi Rumi,

First off, these criticism are all meant to be constructive, I have no ill feeling towards you. Just wanted to comment like only an stranger can.
The photos you have in the blog are great, in fact superior to the ones you see in any other blog. Ditto for most of your outfits. But as you venture out of the blogosphere and into the industry, these photos don't measure up. This picture is really good, but if you look at it through the industry's eyes it is all wrong. The angle and shape of your lower back looks contorted and unnatural, you can clearly see the makeup streaks in your face. The lightings washes you out in a way that you look either dead or really sick.I have nothing bad to say about the styling. It just isn't right with a green patch and lake in the background. The pose doesn't do anything to the picture either. If I were casting, I just don't see why I would pick you from a pile of professional looking emotional pictures.

Just some feedback for you and Colin.
Sorry for hiding behind the anonymous blinds, your followers will mob me if I give out my identity ;)

I think Lily (?) from BLEED FOR FASHION blog did the dress justice. Rumi, love your blog, but I have to agree with the Anonymous posters. This is a bit trashy, and if not that, it looks like you didn't even try. Your face looks really pale here, and your hair is flat. The picture itself has great potential, but please stop looking like you're homeless.

I've been reading your blog for ages but never felt so compelled to comment. This shot is beautiful, it completely captures that moment of the day just leaving and the night just approaching.

The AA mesh dress looks incredible on you and I have to disagree with the poster who claimed Lily from Bleed for Fashion wore it better and classier. She looked cool-- but you really transform the whole thing... from Rocky Horror Picture Show to something really cohesive looking and perfectly balanced between laid-back and totally bold, especially in that stunning sunset-y glow.

I've got the mesh dress too and it drives my bf wild but you've inspired me to start wearing it out of the bedroom. :) I absolutely love your sexy, simple, silver-edged NorCal-SoCal dichotomy of a look. I'm from SF originally as well and your posts make my heart ache with west coast homesickness sometimes. I share it with all my friends here in London-- totally different world style-wise but some great similarities as well-- come visit!

Keep it up, Rumi, you're an icon. Fashion is about taking risks and unlike a lot of style bloggers, you take all the right ones.

hey rumi,

i'm addicted to reading your blog, but i'm more in love with the stuff you used to do (which is why i revisit your archives, like, all the time). i know you're trying to evolve and find your fashion niche, but please please please walk away from the grunge! just back away. step off. leave it in the 90s. please! you're beautiful and you need to rock your classiness. the glorification of grunge in the fashion industry right now is appalling. it's not classy, it's base. and dirty, and grunge is not artistic if you put effort into it. true grunge is effortless. you're slowly gathering more followers in the blogosphere, but please remember your loyal fans from eons ago and why we became your faithful followers from the beginning. and trust me, we're not running around in full-body pantyhose.

i miss whimsical rumi!

I have to agree with some of the previous comments, i'm not feeling inspiration from these outfits anymore...

When I started reading this blog (about 10 months ago) I was astounded by your originality, I loved the way you would wear braclets around your ankles, studded hats and sometimes simply pieced outfits together... Now its so far removed from that...

It's your blog, however it would be nice to see that styling again. Or even chic, you have yet to conquer the chic look and people like me would love to see your spin on it.

Something to think about... perhaps

This is not a proper shot for a modeling agency. They prefer clean shots that show the body's frame, as well as some emotive editorial work to show your range. I'm confused as to why they signed you.

Why don't you book a photoshoot with a photographer from NEXT? Versatility is key in the modeling industry.

Also, why the lack of mentions about Erin? You would do well to answer your critics; it may shut some of them up.

Anonymous said...

it looks like there's some form of white powder on your face, is it just really bad make-up? I also question why you got signed, they probably just want to make money out of you

Australia! That sounds amazing, my only problem is the 24 hour plane ride (for me, maybe shorter for you?) that would probably make me nauseous a couple of times. =(
Ha and the warm weather has me attached to my sandals, sleeveless tops, and any type of light dress.

I don't understand why Next signed you either? I am not an inch jealous with your popularity but I thought models are meant to be thinner and taller. I thought you have to be at least 173cm and have thin thighs. You have short legs in proportion with your body. But what can I say, Colin did a great job... for making you the perfect girl in every picture he took of you. Face wise... they need models who look unique... you can probably do it because you have a weird looking face. I don't know about beautiful? And your style is sold on magazines... so not getting it either?!

Rumi, I don't mean this in an offensive way at all but I just don't think this is the most attractive photo of you. You're very beautiful and the bitch who said your thighs were too big too model and you aren't beautiful should shut the fuck up, because you're probably way skinnier and prettier than her. But something about this photo isn't right. The pose is kind of awkward and your facial expression looks a little like you're sick. Your hair, which I usually love, looks greasy and limp. Nothing personal at all, but I don't think this is really a good modeling picture. While the outfit is alright for this type of picture is alright, it doesn't really look that good. You're very pretty and attractive so I just wouldn't want you to look not so great in one of your modeling pictures.

And to the people who don't know why Next signed her, it probably has to do with this blog, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I don't get the haters who call you a wannabe and cry out in pain for your "whimsical" style from 2 years ago. What is fashion anyway? We all have our icons - models, actors, musicians, etc. We all evolve as people and of course it's our cultural influences that help us decide how to dress, act, whatever. There's 6 billion people in the world - not everyone is going to agree.

While our personal styles differ completely, and that dress in itself does not appeal to me, I'm still addicted to your blog. I think the pictures are great. Keep pushing boundaries and having fun!

I think with Rumi's body, as it realistically isn't the body of models like Jessica Stam or Coca Rocha, it would be termed more 'athletic' in the modeling world. Yes, Rumi is very thin according to societal standards, but in modeling it's about extremes and her body doesn't quite hit the 'extreme'-thin-ness-in-proportion-to-extreme-height mark. As for the comment someone made about her legs being short in proportion to her body, again, I would have to disagree somewhat. The ratio of thigh length to calf length isn't short, but it's not what we typically see in editorial or runway. For the illusion of really long legs, the length of leg below the knee would have to be longer than the thigh. Check out any photo of a model's legs and you'll see it. Anything equal to or shorter than the thigh isn't acceptable for runway and most high-end books. Perhaps more in commercial which I will bet any amount of money will be where Rumi's spotlight will reside.

And of course Next signed her to capitalize on her blog success and her net following. People questionning that should know. In these modern days, it's all about the 'it' medium of entertainment and the interweb is IT. Blogs are still technically in their infancy but are exploding nonetheless so why wouldn't Next want a poster child for that? You either keep up with what's hot or take yourself out of the game now. Do you ask yourself why Next hasn't cleaned her up and had their guys take more streamlined, pro images of her? Because they want to keep her in the sort of rough, blogger-type niche. Bloggers as renegades, the 'wild childs,' the average but slightly elevated 'every-person.'

Now about her longevity in the modeling vein, I'm not sure I can be confident about that. If she were truly model-material she would have been discovered a long time ago. In her teens, as befits most high-profile models. She does live in Lala Land after all, and every conceivable nook of SoCal is swarming with industry people who want to take credit for discovering the next big thing. But, if anything, she will be pushed into a more commercial spotlight and touted as the Diablo Cody of the modeling world. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Hey, it's opening doors for her right? That's my 35-cents on the subject. You're welcome.

Wait, I want to slightly modify what I said about commercial being chiefly the area which she will be pushed in. No, I can see that plus possibly spreads in indie books like Nylon or Pop and maybe a walk down the runway as 'muse' of a designer who represents the X, Y or whatever- the youth generation. But she will be intro'ed as a 'blogger' just like Billy Bob, feisty as he is about it, is intro'ed as an actor before a musician.
