Crop top

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Shorts and necklace, vintage. Ring, Forever 21.

Egged on by Gala's ridiculously good renderings of the 90s crop top all summer long and, of course, a beautiful Swede, I took some scissors to an old track T to test it out. I like it with a mid to high rise and I threw on the huge necklace to make the whole thing look more purposeful. I took this look out for a spin yesterday with the boyfriend in tow (he doesn't even blink an eye at my outfits now) and actually my fellow Californians seemed unphased too. Hmm. This might have something to do with living ten seconds from the beach though..everyone's pretty much in a state of undress at all times.

Just have to throw in that I think the queen of all midriff barings is hands down Carrie Bradshaw, my personal favorites being this and this.

I've been shooting up a storm for the store, but can't add new items until Friday because I don't want auctions to be ending while I'm in New York. So to all of you bidding please be prompt with your payment so I can get your order shipped sooner!

love it! though I hate how you now mostly wear clothes that aren't suited for most people. I'm a size 2 but you need te be really Rumi tones to be able to wear that! Cool though. Love it.

i'd never have thought a crop top would look so good! it makes your waist look absolutely miniscule (not that it doesn't look so otherwise). HOT.

I wish I could get away with a cropped top.

Girl, I can not believe your waist!!!
I hate you!!!
Not really, I admire your waist and your shoes!

Hmm, I'm getting hopeful. Just the other day I bought the loose crop top from AA (looks exactly like what you've got, I feel pretty foolish for having paid full price when it was like, easiest DIY ever) and I was pretty desperate to figure out a way to wear it without feeling like a skanky ass ho. Only problem is it looks a bit tacky with a larger chest. Dammit.

S.S. said...

I hope crop tops don't get so popular again. The wrong person is going to copy that look and it won't be pretty.

Very beachy, indeed.

your abs are ...wow. are you careful about what you eat, or do you work out? or are you just naturally thin/toned? you dont have to answer if you dont want to. :]
cute outfit. i could never pull it off. but you definitely do!

sunset said...

How the heck did you pull off something like the crop top? Wow, you're a fashion genius. Seriously. I totally agree with the Carrie part also -- watching SatC, I always think, "Damn... go SJP."

Anonymous said...

how do you maintain your figure? just curious, maybe you are one of the lucky ones with a high metabolism!

Daniela said...

You have an amazing waist...but I am just not a fan of this look.

Anonymous said...

Yikes, I think the wrong person already copied this look. You seem to have sluttified (sorry, just my opinion) the crop top look compared to carrie b. and all the others you have linked. It looks refreshingly great on them.

Anonymous said...

i'm pretty sure anyone can wear a crop top just as long as you don't have a tire around your mid area. you just have to get the proportions right. if you're not comfortable showing your stomach wear higher waisted bottoms with a longer crop top. sorry rumi, but i think you look a bit anorexic in that crop top...maybe a slimmer shirt would look better on your frame...

Judy said...

^The outfit is now ruined by the image of anorexic patients and druggies wearing similar things. But I did like the outfit when I first saw it. It's just that your waist in so incrediblely tiny and your tiny waist needs a tighter top on top..

Mike said...

loveeeee that necklace.

Miranda said...

silent reader for a while now but i couldn't not comment on this.

i'm so jealous of your tummy it's riduculous. and i agree, definitely reminds me of SJP.

Melissa said...

I happen to disagree with these comments about you looking anorexic. Sweetheart, you pull this off so well and so what if your waist looks tiny while doing it? By the way, your necklace is darling!

Rumi, I love your style, but please other bloggers don't go thinking you have to be as thin as Rumi to look good, or pull things off. Embrace what you have, curves will always be amazing.

Anonymous said...

you look hungry

sherizzle said...

love the outfit! you must work out a lot...i thought it was just your legs and arms, but your abs are incredibly toned. how do you do it??

Anonymous said...

I can't believe you're wearing something I don't like. The way it makes your hips/upper legs look compared to your stomach is so very wrong. Of course, saying it's slutty is wrong too. It's more... tacky, maybe? Just not slutty.

I also cannot believe what a lack of bangs does to your face, my goodness. It makes your facial structure stand out so much more- it's incredible! It's so much to the point that you just begin to remind me of Native American features. Such a random jump. So I for one am glad you had the bangs accident. :)

Anonymous said...

your too skinny.... not a compliment btw

Rumi, you don't look anorectic. You look great.

Do you just do yoga, or do you do other working out?

Lea said...

Rumi, I love your blog but something has happened to it lately. Does anyone else agree? It used to be a lot more unaffected, effortless really. You now seem to have lost what makes great outfits on great girls alluring: a sense of humility. I don't know why, but this last post really solidified that for me. Just spent the summer in France, where so many girls have the best style. Their secret is modesty. This lacks.

Louise said...

Tiniest waist ever, or at least this makes it look that way! I think maybe a slight tighter crop top would make you look a little more proportionate? Not that having a tiny waist is something anyone would have a problem with!!

YOU DID IT! i knew it will be loads of comments about this..but you know why...:)

i think it looks fav! i mean, every trend doesn't suit everybidy. And people should know that.
This one suits better skinny ones and small chested. But as an example,Pixie Geldof(a celebrity here) its a healthy uk size 10(i think a usa12) and shes been rocking the cropped top with those jeans you wear and doc merteens and she absolutely pulled it off!!!!(see here http://asosblog.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/07/11/pixieinhercroptop.jpg )
So is more about know your body and how you can make it work.
I mean...i dont think the trend will last ages,it cames and goes. But is nice for summer, cheap and easy to make!

(in reference to some of the stuff said above - Surely we all come here to look at this blog as a FASHION blog where we find inspiration for our style, not somewhere to analyse Rumi's body on a daily basis?? Most of us don't know her personally, and even if we did I think we still wouldn't have the right to drop comments like a couple that were left here. It's unnecessary, could be hurtful, and definitely not our business.)

kimberley said...

gala, if you can't be respectful, then i will. i disagree with your outburst because anorexia is a VERY real problem in the fashion industry. girls DIE from it. and seeing imagery such as this, regardless of the fact that "this is fashion", these sort of photos can encourage girls to want to be skinnier and skinnier, especially girls that aren't naturally skinny, posing a real risk of death.

as someone who has suffered from an eating disorder for the last year (now in recovery...) I know what an anorexic/verging on ill person looks like. This is not it. This is a healthy slender girl with normal sized arms and legs and an enviabley toned flat stomach. People shouldn't leave such unpleasant comments on a fashion blog, comment on the outfit not the body shape

everyone is being silly. rumi's slim definitely but not anoerexic. i srsly think its an asian thing; i've got thicker legs and a really toned stomach, even though i don't do anything. and look at her hips/thighs; they're definitely not BIG but they're not anoerexic skinny. just because you don't have muffin top does not mean you're anoerexic.

I am saddened by the controversy this post has sparked. We are conditioned not to tell people that they look overweight, but most people have little trouble telling someone they look anorexic without understanding the gravity of the statement or the disease itself. Anorexia first and foremost is a mental disorder, not created by the fashion industry, ballet, etc. Looking at a photo of a thin girl is not going to send hundreds of girls running to vomit their much unless they already have a problem. Saying that someone should gain weight because they are seen as a role model to young girls is ludicrous - the most important part of being a role model is staying true to oneself.

Christina said...

As someone who is also very naturally thin and has been criticized in the past for a "eating disorder", I'd say Rumi has no signs of an eating disorder. She looks healthy and toned. She just happens to be the product of EXERCISE, something a lot of people in this country should try.

omg how odd there are so many negative comments. Not to add to fuel to the fire but I think maybe they might be driven by the fact so many people are overweight( Fat.) and feel insecure seeing someone pretty/skinny/highly popular blog site.

I'm just confused, I'VE always noticed you to be thin(and it looks nice!) I thought everyone else did too?? Hmmm. the hate is Out of control. lol

Ok not to turn this into thearphy, but I'm a size 2 and I'm like carrieish body type minus a cup size but I used to be really thin up until last year. I used to hate when people said things to me about it..(I was like a 0,98 LBS), esp negative, so Idk people need to think about how that feels.

you people suck for talking crap.
even if it is speaking your mind, its rude.

Tali said...

I think you look amazing Rumi! I'm naturally petite and skinny and have gotten my fair share of negative comments about my weight. Some people just don't get that everyones bodies are different and no one should critize each other for it!

Anonymous said...

To add to the whole anorexia illness controversy thing... does anyone actually look further than her frame? Is her skin dry and pale? Are her eyes sunken? Does she look weak? Does she show signs of exhaustion? How does her complexion look?

No. She looks fine. She looks healthy. Anorexia is an illness. Don't tarnish all slim people with the same brush.

Anonymous said...

Hey Rumi, I have never commented before but I think your blogging is the best. It seems once every so often a torrent of abuse comes your way.
It is obvious that people who are negative and rude about your size are only envious. Do they really think that by being offensive and telling someone to eat in such a rude manner, would help someone with an eating disorder? I mean how sensitive! People seem to get so angry about other people's weight.
You look normal and lovely and your style is out of this world! And I am envious of that.
Still what a lot of nice, positive comments you get and I hope you focus on that...
I always look forward to your next post and thanks for writing this blog, Thea xoxoxox

Hey! She's so not suffering from anorexia please!!! She's... normal-sized. Either that or the rest of the girls commenting are big-boned, because if you go to any Asian country (like where I am from) there are COUNTLESS of girls who are as skinny (if not more) than Rumi. And they don't exercise much. And they eat normally. Haha. If you gorge yourself just to "make yourself a role model to young girls out there", this unnaturalism surely parallels the unnaturalism of anorexia. Is that healthy then?

If she's fat, you girls would be appalled by her imperfection, yet there are other girls who slime her precisely for being hot. Come on!!! Anyway Rumi, I usually think you look pretty good, but this outfit (and the previous few) just do not do it for me! Frankly, you look rather skanky and all. It's not that you can't be sexy, but you can be sophisticatedly sexy. :).

Rumi, it's jealousy! That's all! Some of us can admit it as we type with our untoned bellies hiding under our full length shirts, others hate themselves so much they resort to bitching on your appearance but seriously, you're gorgeous. Don't let them get to you. xxx

Rumi said...

Hi sexies. Thank you to everyone who shared their opinion in an eloquent and respectful way. I consider myself very lucky to have so many of you as readers.

When I first started reading these comments, I thought what a shame it was that it wasn't possible for people to know exactly how much I do eat. I eat whatever I want to, whenever I want to, which is why I exercise by practicing yoga. I'm obviously not bony or frail looking (though some people are...naturally) and have received numerous comments in the past in regards to how athletic I look. I actually rather enjoy being strong and flexible, and I've had a small waist for as long as I can remember. And if you truly think that I am corrupting youths the world over (WHAT??), you must be utterly deluded. Why wouldn't they go straight to the source and break out a picture of an overworked runway model if they were inclined to such masochistic behavior? And even then, that person's psychological state is far more to blame than the fact that that model exists. It's mind-boggling how incomprehensible it is to so many that different body types are just that.

But then I realized how ridiculous of a position it is to be put in to have to defend one's physicality and diet whatsoever. On the internet, at that. I would never even think of going to someone's fashion blog and railing on their appearance, especially in such a specific and potentially mentally harmful manner. This post was supposed to be about a cheesy 90s trend and a huge ugly necklace, if anything, and it somehow devolved into a huge polemic. It's as if some of you have never been to a beach or seen a muscle.

I started moderating comments a couple months ago when I came back from a two day absence from the internet to find an onslaught of disgusting profanity on my last post. This coming from someone who swears constantly. So yes I will reject your comment if I find it disgusting or ridiculously rude, or if it attacks others in an inexplicably vicious way.

Why are so many people that apparently possess such disdain for what I do and wear reading my blog? Surely you could find a more positive outlet somewhere on the internet that suits your sensibilities.

Rumi, that was well said. Please keep doing what you are doing. You look healthy and strong, and you owe an explanation to no one. It is absolutely no body's business what one eats or does not eat. If there is real concern, then it should be addressed in confidence.

I think that when ever one puts themselves out there, they will be open to love and to haters.

It is so interesting what this simple post stirred up in people.

Thank you for sharing your style.

I can understand why your so riled up at all the harsh posts, but you have an internet blog and everyone is entitled to their opinion. You post pictures of yourself in different outfits and of course it will be open to praise or attacks you put yourself in the position to be judged so I guess it just comes with the territory. And you contradict yourself by saying why the outrage as if some of us have never seen muscles or been to the beach when in your post you say u noticed how other people weren't even phased by your outfit which means you expected a reaction and what do you expect you got one

Rumi said...

Anon 9:17 it was hardly a contradiction, what I was referring to in the beginning was a general reaction to the return of such a dated 90s item with a distinct silhouette, and not whether or not people were going to gasp at my physical appearance and whisper that I looked anorexic. I respect that a lot of people find the look tacky and some people commented that this was so, but many comments became less about the top and more about how horrifying they found my uhhh "bobblehead". I wouldn't really say that I'm riled up, more just surprised at how strong the reactions were to these two simple photos. Luckily I'm pretty psychologically intact. But thank you for voicing your thoughts in a normal way, seriously.

Jeez, whats with all the negativity! It's not tacky. You are not too skinny. It's not a cry for attention. Its just great fashion, why do people have a porblem with that?! Rumi you look great, you always do...I love your style, and if other people can't appreciate it then they are just sheep. Keep it up. LOVE the necklace your wearing with the cropped tee...it looks like antique costume jewellery, which I love.

A really strange trend, but with a stomach like that you pull it off. Your figure is amazing, and don't let anybody tell you that you have a 'bobblehead'. You just don't.

I've always always been naturally slim (I'm 5 foot 3 and 90 pounds) but I eat like a (healthy) horse, and do no exercise at all. So it's understandable that you have such a great figure, seeing as you do exercise. I'm definitely going to go be my mum's yoga buddy.

Poor Poor Rumi.. I have been reading your blog for about six months, and Im shocked at this reaction. Personally i dont think you should be defending yourself..this is a fashion blog and everyone needs to remember that phrase 'if you've got nothing nice to say dont say anything at all'. How dare they be so rude.

Im a naturally skinny size 8 (uk)im 24 and i have always eaten what i want.I had a horrible experience when a girl i didnt know walked up to me in the toilet and angrily said 'im taking diet pills because of you' I cant tell you how much it upset me, Im built with a small waist and thin legs,my whole family is slim, I cant change it. Please delete all the horrible comments, you dont have to take it, and keep up your passion for fashion..you are a natural. Remember your fans and forget the others x x x x x x

Oh please. People are saying you look anorexic? That is ridiculous you look healthy and toned and athletic = amazing. Good for you, anyone with half a brain can see that you are the epitome of health.

ok last comment. You seem quite well(well stable) but I thought I'd say this anyway.

People are inherently quite selfish. They live with mirrors in front of their faces...so even when they're talking to you, they're talking to themselves. 90% of the time. Seriously.

Call me pessimistic, but that idea has helped me get over a LOT of criticism...well HARSH criticism and even downright negative comments about things that shouldn't concern other people like my ethnic background(black but my parents are mixed), my physiology, my hair, whatever it may be.

People are sadly driven by their emotions, lack of control of them, and their self-doubts. No doubt, theres Hormer Simpson in all of us, just some don't let it drive us to distraction.

Anyway, having said that, I hope you aren't taking the comments serious and thus feeling bad about yourself. Because these people are responding to their own insecurities, which of course has NOTHING to do with you.

Dude I really need a blog. lol

Rumi, the fact that you are so unfazed emotionally about these attacks is the coolest thing ever. I'd be more jealous of your awesome self esteem than of your great abs. (If I had to choose to be jealous about something ;))

Rumi you look great and I like your take on the cropped top! I long felt it wasn't right when seeing them back om the street, (every once in a while, mainly on 40 year olds, don't ask me why?!?!!) After seeing Christina Ricci rock one in Black snake moan last year it was on my mind in a good way again..Anyway about this body conscious direction the comments you receive have taken, I believe people that are not naturally skinny might not understand that some actually are so without beeing unhealthy. Anyone can see that you dont have bones popping out, and that you are in fact very toned..And I envy your slim waist;) Anyway my point is that it bothers me that people think it's so OK to critic whenever someone is skinny, like it's a crime beeing even naturally so. A lot of girls actually put a lot of effort into eating as much as they can trying to gain unnatural weight as a result of such comments (I know, I used to be one of them)..I dont believe thats healthy either. You people that are such a hurry to make negative comments as soon as someone is skinnier than you(because I'm convinced that this isn't coming from skinny people!) please stop and think for a moment before you say something like that next time..

I never realized how tiny you are! You look fab though :o)

woah! if i had a waist like that i'd be wearing cropped tops every single day.

You look awesome. I wish I had worn more daring outfits when I could have. Now I have 2 kids and a stretched out lower stomach...no matter how many sit ups I do. I am pretty thin, 5'9" and 125, but just don't have the stomach for this anymore. Enjoy it while you can! (Don't get me wrong, the kids are totally worth losing the ability to wear belly baring shirts!:)

"because if you go to any Asian country (like where I am from) there are COUNTLESS of girls who are as skinny (if not more) than Rumi".

i agree. Asian girls are usually build slender. i'm a size s but i'm huge compared to the people there.

mean people suck. they are so obviously jealous, this is why they accuse you of having an eating disorder and tell you that you have a bobble head.... you don't ...and you look healthy and your body isn't gross in anyway, it is amazing. I really can't believe these comments, have some decency people.

omg I'm so going back to my daily yoga regiment after reading this post! rumi your waist is tiny, i want!!

Well, I really believe Rumi was born tiny like that. Growing up and most of my friends are Japanese, even my own best friend she's Jap and has a size 24 waist. Actually my bff has a similar figure as yours, toned legs and super small waist. She's born like that, too. I know how lucky U guys. She can eats whatever she wants and still maintain the same weight. I'm very jealous, too. LOL. As you know most Japanese people are very small in size. If you go to Japan, all clothing either one size or S and M the largest. Same thing as shoes size, they are mostly under size 7 womens believe it or not. It's just Japanese genetics. Same thing like their skin, they have such beautiful skin if you notice. Lucky U anyway.

GOD some people are so Jealous it's really scary, you look perfect, this is how young fit body look like, in the early 90s when i was a teen everyone wore cropped tops had tummies like this and we do not even knew what an eating disorder was. People totally lost their sense of what a normal young body looks like, i'm quite shocked really.
You look absolutely great, of course only the very young can get away with it, or at least people that did not wore it like this the first time around, and I hope all this people that criticized you do NOT try the look, i do not even want to imagine what they would look like.
I'm amazed how such a common item of clothe in the 80s and 90s can be so controversial in the 2000s.

you have the most amazing body!
haha god i need to work out some more if i want to pull the crop top off. What do you do to look that good?!

Anonymous said...

i just read through quite a few of the comments here and what the hell is wrong with some people.
She looks amazing, it's not tacky or slutty or anything.
Your just jealous :)
and i mean so am i but i would rather use it as inspiration to get my own abs looking as great.
I hope you don't take this criticism to heart... although i'm sure your used to some disaproving looks with some of your crazy (but amazing) outfits.
Keep doing what your doing, your blog is truly amazing i read it religiously haha.

I admire you for experimenting & not holding back on any of your posts and feel sorry for the others who felt the need to criticize.

Honey, you look gorgeous. Do not even mind the Secret Internet Fatties, jealousy is such a powerful evil thing. You're stomach is toned as hell, giiirl, lets trade. And I love how daring you are. Thats what fashion is all about, trying new things.

You are so tiny!
Gorgeous though.

kat said...

i believe the people who are leaving negative comments are extremely jealous... i've been reading your post for months now and I think you have an awesome bod...! not to mention an amazing wardrobe and style... even in your auctions you make them look nice.

Anonymous said...

that is an awful thing to call someone anorexic if you don't know if that person is! shame on those people. i have a sister that has an eating disorder and i can tell from rumi's figure that she is healthy and probably is really young so of course it's natural to have less curves. i was a size negative zero with no tone (rumi has a lot of tone) and i was never anorexic. i am asian frame and that is genetic. i ate like a pig. i'm no longer a size negative zero because i do not exercise or watch what i eat. and i'm not 20 something anymore. just because someone is thin does not make them anorexic. please! i think rumi looks terrific.

Melanie said...

I think you look fab! Crop tops just have something so fun about them... they make me think of slip and slides, ring pops and eye-searingly bright nail polish lol. And people? This is a fashion blog. Not a food/body blog. I don't think it's AT ALL appropriate to comment on her body, only the clothes.

Damn Rumi, you're hot :). From a guy, I'm letting you know it's very attractive ;).
