Lanphear does cheap chic

I always look forward to seeing Kate Lanphear's work in Elle, though not as much as I do to seeing random street style snaps of her on The Sartorialist and Style.com - her futuristic crop of white hair is always perfectly set off by her grungy/edgy style. If you thought there were only so many ways to wear black, just check out her thread at The Fashion Spot.

Last week, when airport boredom led me to the magazine stand, I stopped obnoxiously lingering and flipping and purchased the issue on the spot after seeing this editorial featuring her styling work. The pieces she used are ridiculously cheap, the details listing off brands such as Forever 21, Fruit of the Loom, and Converse for Target, though they are spruced up by thousands and thousands of dollars worth of jewelry. Gotta keep it high fashion somehow, duh. The pieces she used are very familiar (lamé leggings, denim shorts/vest, leather jacket) but taken to another level. I dug out my scanner that I haven't touched for about two years to share these, so sorry if they're crooked, horridly done, etc. - I can seriously never manage to align the pages properly. Now to find those amazing stripey knit shorts...

I find myself purchasing magazines when I find an editorial that inspires me (even if it's only 3 pages) it's a vice.

damn, this confirms my idea/philosophy you really don't need to spend a lot to look great. I was thiiisss close to getting the AA scope neck dress in black, but those lame pants look so delicious. Decisions, decisions..

LOVE HER! she's awesome! and yes she does wear black all the time and still manages to look great every time, that takes commitment and great style i think
Not a lot of people can do that
The editorial looks fantastic...any chance you can get it bigger...i want to see more details!

Oh she's awesome isn't she? I would love to be that edgy but I'm a frills and fringes girl all the way.

Wow some great ideas. I love editorials which do cheap and chic in new ways rather than following trends. So hard to find.

I love how wearable all the looks are. Usually when they use cheap items in editorials, they come up with some really bizarre (albeit awesome) outfits.

This spread was the sole reason I purchased that issue. LOVE it. Naturally, I found myself coveting the $2,000 pieces more than the cheap ones most of the time. Doh!

that is SO crazy that you just posted this because I just tore out some of the photos from my Elle magazine to add to my "book" of inspiration for when i get dressed in the morning., hahah

Cool editorial- I love her look too. I wish I could pull off the angular futuristic haircut. I think due to the economy (and the trend that you don't need to spend a lot to have style) I've noticed a lot of magazines featuring lower priced clothing, and not even in a "look for less" or similar type feature.

i always admire people who scan. the things they do for their readers...soo thanks! and i linger and flip too. saves lots of money and dashed hopes.

oh and i used to dance, and have these super short stripey knit warm-up shorts. they're made by Harmonie i think, just fyi.

i find this sort of high/low mix inspiring. i think that's a lot of our wardrobes. we have our investment pieces & then team them with forever 21, target, h&m items...

now if only i had $34,000 in jewels laying around as well...

does give hope though

this is my fav feature of the mag and it reminded me of your style instantaneously! you needn't dig out the scanner the next time around though because they have the full scans on the website (elle.com) - i felt a little dumb for purchasing the magazine after i found out everything's online!
