These boots are currently a minor obsession of mine, even though Scott Schumann recently tarnished the name of the midcalf boot (Sart! come to San Francisco!). Actually I didn't like that particular pair either but I think the style in general can work. There are more flattering styles out there but the nostalgia factor is rather heavy with this pair, since they remind me approximately 100% of a pair (by Esprit no less!) I had in middle school. Except my Esprit pair had sweet sweet hiking laces that went almost all the way down the toe so they sort of resembled mountain-friendly ice skates. What more could you ask for in a shoe? Well, perhaps a lot...my feet were on the receiving end of many a (befuddled?) stare on the street today. But my love will hold strong. And on the Esprit tangent, whatever happened to the arbiter of '90s hipness? I think my favorite days of my 7th grade era were when my mother would, albeit begrudgingly, agree to escort me and my fellow gangly friends to the Esprit outlet in San Francisco where we browsed fuzzy peach motif shirts, mildly inappropriate sundresses, and reversible leopard print purses for hours. Don't even get me started on that catalog, talk about sick obsession.
And is it just me, or do I need new clothes? I feel like I've been over-wearing a lot of pieces, maybe I just need to do that thing where I dig around for five minutes in my closet and find myriad items I completely forgot I owned. Though that just sounds like something that would lead me to try on odd outfits until inappropriately wee hours of the morning...I had to laugh when reader Greenlady asked me when I sleep since I always post so late at night and have to get so early to commute. Luckily I am a zombie that tries to fit as much into one day as possible. So the answer is..hardly ever.
BUT there are changes underway, and my company was kind enough to allow me to sort of morph my role, which will allow me to work remotely. This is huge, and means several things. Firstly, more Fashion Toast and Treasure Chest Vintage action. Second, I will have time to do things like slumber and get haircuts. And third, I won't necessarily be bound to the Bay Area. Palm trees are starting to sound good again...

Ah I love the skirt/Belt combo. I really dont feel like you over-wear items too much, or perhaps Im just as much guilty of the crime myself. But don't we all need more clothes? Even though my closet is bursting, and I could probably get lost in the little thing, I need more =) I agree to with the no sleep thing.. I can't even remember a before 12am sleep. Lack of sleepers unite!..
Oh and I like the boots, Ignore the stares! Maybe its jealousy
Overwearing can be a positive thing - it means a) you're getting your money's/time's/effort's worth out of an item b) you actually like it enough to wear it repeatedly. I like the idea of a personal uniform (maybe its cos i'm a sicko who misses her school uniform way too much).
However, i don't work in fashion so i have a much blander outlook on my wardrobe than those who do! And i'm not great at experimenting. In any case - even if you overwear certain pieces you seem to know how to style them differently each time so its all hood.
Your boots are awesome, i remember i had black ones back in grade 6 and i wore them to this girl's birthday party with tights and a miniskirt and i was soooo self conscious and everyone was like 'why are you wearing those you crackhead!' (except not in those words). I just bought a similar pair off ebay - when mum saw me i was preparing myself for her to be like 'yuck what on earth are you wearing' but instead she was like 'ooooh aren't they fantastic' and told me how 70s they were.
Also, i think mid-calf boots ARE in fact flattering on me. Along with that they are the exact right blend of dressy/casual for my taste.
Great look!
I never did agree with that particular Sartorialist post. No matter, you pull off the boots with aplomb.
I hope it's okay I featured some pictures of you in my blog.
i think midcalf shoes in general are really good...especially if they're heels, they tend to lengthen my legs
the boots are so rad! and btw i think over-wearing is great, you are getting the most out of your pieces, so that's great!
you totally inspired me to start my blog btw
oooooooooooh you mentioned me in your blog - this made me grin like the cat that got the cream - my boyfriend asked me why and when I told him even he was happy for me!! so honoured.
I think as long as you have slim legs mid calf boots are fine and it's actually probably my favourite length - still gives you a bit of warmth but doesn't shorten the legs like higher boots and don't leave you in any danger of cold ankles (THE worst) like ankle boots. I think for maybe the first time ever, he (the wise one) was wrong when he said that - i also think the girl he said it about looks fablous in her boots - so there you go. Just my opinion. And you look gorgeous as always. xx P.S don't cut your hair its great - very Brigitte Bardot-esk - a blonde mane.
P.P.S: hope you got the advice about the ksubis...
where in the bay area are you from? just curious, cause i'm from danville, in the east bay. your recent pictures make me so nostalgic for home, especially because i'm currently stuck in utah.
I like this style !
Woman, I love those boots!!!! Do you have a better picture of them?? I need like a damn panaromic view!!
you seem to have less clothes than me but your coordination of different outfits are always inspiring which is great and reminds me to minimize!
also that boot length is a death sentence to someone like me (5'2") but someone with your height and physique pulls it off quite well. very cool boots!
I love the boots, they don't seem unflattering at all!
It doesn't seem to me like you need new clothes, rewearing an item every so often is no bad thing, it just means you've found something you really love!
I love those boots, nonetheless, whatever the Sartorialist says about mid-calf boots.
a request to rewear the catherine holstein forever 21 sailor tunic thingy.
Monica, miss at la playa, has told to me about your blog and I´ve discovered your special and incredible style.
Do you want to exchange links with me? My blog is Cool & Chic, www.coolandchic.blogspot.com , if you want to visit it. Thanks, I will add you to my links. A kiss
i've been overwearing EVERYTHING. i need a good cleansing of the closet. too bad im broke as a joke. i am studying in italy this year and if i plan on surviving over there with the exchange rate, i need to save up. ah well.
haha fuzzy peach motif shorts! I HAVE THOSE! i still love the esprit outlet (well mine is in woodbury, ny). anyway this is my fav post of yours ever because of the peach shorts mention. and also im kinda going through a questionable shoe phase myself. it's nice to know i'm not alone.
ps hooray to more fashion toast posts and less working!
everyone can always use new clothes!
i remember having hiking boots like those you described ... ohh 90s ..
Cute pic!
congrats to you...slumber is very important.
I like your boots that is I have a thing for those types of high heel boots especially black ones:-) I wouldn't care much about Scott Schumann and his trashing of midcalf boots and certain looks.
Mid-calf boots don't work for someone as short as me (5'2"), but you have the legs for them and they look amazing on you.
I used to shop at Esprit my freshman year of highschool. I'm 23 now, but if Esprit was still in existence I would probably shop there occasionally. They had some pretty rad finds back in the day.
You look great. Love the boots, they are superb.
ps - added you to my blog list. Love your blog and pics.
http://everybodysaysdont.blogspot.com/
great outfit, those boots are nice and they look really flattering on you actually :)
Haha! It's so funny that you actually linked to the post on the Sartorialist because as soon as I saw the picture, I thought "Uh oh. What would Scott think?"
You pull it off well, though, as always. And I think (and a very strong think at that) that I might attempt Camille's DIY project and create a skirt of my own. I'm feeling artsy today.
God, I remember the days when my mother would bring my sisters and I to the huge two level Esprit shop in Singapore and let us roam for hours. But recently here in Perth an Esprit shop closed down. So sad.....
Omg, you simply look amazing. i love the way you here the denim jacket! and the Marc Jacobs bag is .. GORGEOUS!
Check my blog when you have the time :-)
xxx
First off, love the boots, and it doesn't seem AT ALL to me that you're repeating outfits. You're so creative with your choices - every outfit is unique.
Also, I have added a link to you in my blog: www.mybarestyle.com. Take a look and if you like it, I'd love for you to add a link to me.
Thanks for all of the inspiration! xoxo
OMG! Esprit! and OMG, I'm wearing a pair of very old i wear them as pjs Esprit pants right now! and i totally relate to trying on outfits until 3 am.
Anyway, those boots are awesome. u look great
I love that skirt so much!
My mom used to always make me wear Esprit!
You know I remember having a pair of shoes when I was younger that reminded me so much of the ones 'New Kids On the Block' wore (don't ask me why, I haven't a clue myself). I lived in those shoes. I wore 'em out 'n begged my mom for another pair. I felt like in those shoes I could do no wrong, I was the coolest of cool 'n my dance moves were on par with the boys of the band. So funny when I think of it, Lol. I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one who was like that as a kid. Wow, great nostalgic moment :)
PS. I said it before, but I'll say it again. I love your boots. :D 'n yay for the 90's coming back... believe it or not I've missed it, haha.
Yes please! a panoramic view of the boots would be nice! :D
I love the boots...and I especially love the jacket with that bag....
you are way too cool.
you should be a model, or an it girl or something! ahhhhh
I adoree midcalf boots, even though my legs are like stumps. You pull the look of really well. I love your style. :]
Hi Rumi
I am a french fan of you blog !!!(From Paris)
I really love your style !!! It is funny because you're dreaming to live in Paris and my best friend and I are dreaming to live in California !!!
Anyway We both love your blog and it such a great inspiration for us !!!
I have a question about your balenciaga bag, they are real or fake? they're looking really good but balenciaga bag are also very expensive, so that's why I ask you for it!!!
Gros bisous (translate: Big kiss)
Julia and Oceane
( sorry for my english!!!)
Cute. I've been gradually getting back into wearing my denim jackets too. :)
Hey rumi!
What are your favorite vintage shops in the bay area- if you wouldn't mind saying? Thank.
Well, I'm going to be looking forward to seeing new inspiration photos. In my opinion, you post entirely too little...
I look forward to your postings with relish.
Love the look here...Your legs always look so toned, do you exercise or is it just walking in heels?
Your sleeping habits sound so much like mine. During the week I never manage go go to bed before 12 and I always start trying on different outfits at late hours and don't stop until it's really late. I also have to get up early for work but I try to make up for the lack of sleep on the weekends.
That's a great opportunity your company is giving you, working remotely. Congratulations!
Great outfit as always ;)
i love that skirt! i was just wondering, what material did you use to make it!? xx
Love this outfit - it looks so great! :)
You don't normally see denim jackets and skirts with such tough boots, but it looks really good on you.
you have the most beautiful legs i've ever seen.... i would kill for legs like that!
that skirt is fantastic.
I totally agree about mid 90s Esprit - catalog, clothes and everything! The owners sold the company a while ago and since then Esprit just doesn't quite have the sparkle they used to have.
